Norwegian War Hero’s 1941 Irvin Flying Jacket
Rare example as original 1941 dated label still present. Air Ministry marked, size 3, number and name present 113432 Christophersen. Leather is supple and not damaged. Front zip and cuff zips work. Front zip is Air Ministry marked as well of one of the cuff zips. The other cuff zip is unmarked. The glued seam where the front zipper meets the leather on the flap which goes inside the jacket has separated but is not damaged and could easily be fixed. The same is true for one of the seams on the cuff zipper. I can send any additional photographs if required.
London Gazette entry:
Acting Flight Lieutenant Gunnar Rolf CHRISTOPHERSEN (113432), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 221 Squadron. This officer has completed many reconnaissances over the Mediterranean. On four occasions his skilful work has enabled successful attacks to be made on enemy shipping, Flight Lieutenant Christophersen has displayed great courage and determination, often flying at low level in face of enemy fire to ensure accuracy.
Although I have not had time to properly research this piece, I have found some images of Christophersen as a veteran showing his medals and laying a wreath. I can’t remember the time I saw for sale an attributed Irvin with its original label.
