WW2 Squadron Leader Gilbert 460 Squadron RAAF Killed In Action Group
Small lot of items formerly the property of 39458 Squadron Leader Colin Leslie Gilbert Royal Australian Air Force. Squadron Leader Gilbert pilot was pilot of Z1254 Vickers Wellington IV. On the night of 6/7 May 1942 when his aircraft was hit by flak causing the port engine to catch fire. The fire spread to the fuselage and Sgt. Lake (who survived as a PoW) bailed out at around 11000 feet. He did not see any other members of the crew exit the aircraft which then exploded whilst flying straight and level. It was hit near Karlsruhe Germany.
All items were contained in an envelope addressed to his wife.
