Killed in action 22nd of October 1914 from 07:00am the front of the 7th Division was heavily bombarded by enemy fire especially affecting the junction of the 21st and 22nd Brigades in front of Polygon Wood. At about 15:00pm after eight hours of heavy shelling, German infantry (Remnants of the 54th Division) was seen to be advancing over the crest of the ridge running from Becelaere to Zonnebeke, against the front of the 21st Brigade and its junctions with the 22nd near Reutel. Here the 2nd Green Howards, 2nd Royal Scots Fusiliers and 2nd Wiltshire were in line and under fierce fire.
